The importance of families and guardians being involved in prevention work

We sat down with three of the family advisory board members and asked them to describe the importance of families/guardians being involved in prevention work.

“Prevention work is critical to healthy communities. I believe families, young, middle aged, and even those who may be retired, are all directly impacted by substance abuse in our communities. Whether you have a personal relationship with a loved one who has been impacted by drugs or you pay taxes, you have directly or indirectly been affected by drug abuse. It is our responsibility to educate and empower our youth on the not so glamorous outcomes of drug use, that can affect us spiritually, mentally, physically and financially.”

  • Natalya, Snellvile, GA

“It is essential to have family involvement in prevention because this type and level of support of each family will develop the child and promote empowerment in families to help prevent substance abuse or any risky behavior. When the family and the community target interventions, the focus is more on the positive aspects of not using drugs. This includes messages on saying 'NO' to drugs and resisting peer pressure. This, in turn, will give the child the tools that are needed to walk away when in a peer-pressure situation.”

  • Miriana, Grovetown, GA

“Children who have parents who set clear rules and punishments, monitor their activities on a regular basis, and explain to them about the risk involved are less likely to use addictive substances. In order to avoid youth substance misuse, loving adults, support and active participation are essential.”
