How the Georgia Teen Institute enhances YFAB work

YFAB member, Nia, shares her experience with the Georgia Teen Institute (GTI)--a youth leadership program for Youth Action Teams throughout Georgia that begins with a summer training program and continues with year-round support. GTI is dedicated to providing young people with opportunities to become strong leaders.

“My favorite part of being a member of the Youth and Family Advisory Board as a Young Adult has been being able to attend the Georgia Teen Institute. Until now, the entire board and I were meeting via Zoom calls and interacting positively with each other, but we had not had our first real experience collaborating. At the Georgia Teen Institute, I was able to physically meet these same individuals, interact, collaborate, share ideas, and learn about each other as we maneuvered through meaningful activities.

The best part of GTI was when we analyzed data as a unit and shared similar thoughts, feelings, and reactions while brainstorming positive solutions. Another memorable moment at the Georgia Teen Institute, as a Young Adult, was accompanying Ms. Flores as she interacted with ladies of her cohort. As I sat and listened, the ladies spoke with enthusiasm for their perspective programs, highlighting the positive experiences they have had, even with trials and tribulations. They also came together to attack issues presented during their meeting, impacting more than just one program.

As GTI concluded, Ms. Maria and the rest of my YFAB family took a group picture and wished everyone safe travels on their journeys back home. The opportunity felt like a shower of love, learning, and transparency. I have never been so delighted to be part of such a fantastic group, and I am so excited for what is to come.”
