Prevention resources available to Georgia youth

YFAB members, Skyy, Ashlyn, and Shy, share their thoughts on prevention resources and share those resources available to Georgia youth.

Georgia has a variety of prevention resources available to its youth that are designed to help them make healthy decisions, stay safe, and reach their full potential.

  • The Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities has a range of programs aimed at youth and young adults, including the Georgia Prevention Project and the Georgia Adolescent Substance Abuse Prevention Initiative.

  • The Georgia Prevention Project provides youth with educational materials, prevention programming, and technical assistance.

  • The Georgia Adolescent Substance Abuse Prevention Initiative helps to prevent the initiation and progression of substance abuse among youth by providing resources and support to families and communities.

  • The Georgia Department of Education also provides a wide array of prevention resources for youth and young adults. These resources include the Georgia Student Health Survey, which gives school districts information to help create school-based prevention programs, and the Georgia Youth Risk Behavior Survey, which measures risky behaviors and identifies areas where programs and resources are needed.

  • The Georgia Department of Education also has the Georgia Parent Education and Resource Center, which provides information and resources to help parents support their children’s learning.

In addition, there are a number of organizations in Georgia that are dedicated to helping youth make healthy decisions. For example, the Georgia Alliance for Drug-Free Youth provides information, resources, and support to help families and communities prevent substance abuse. The Georgia Center for Youth Empowerment works to empower young people to make healthy choices and take an active role in their own health and well-being. Finally, the Georgia Network to End Sexual Exploitation provides resources and support to protect youth from sexual exploitation and human trafficking.”

“Prevention resources are measures put in place to educate youth and concerned individuals on how to strengthen their knowledge and engagement when it comes to factors that are harmful to self. SAMHSA has many prevent resources which is integrated by national data. This is completed by sharing materials and informations from other substance misuse prevention programs; and using additional publications and resources. Many prevention resources can be founded on the internet or through many web portals such as: SAMHSA, Behavioral Health sites that are not limited to certain facilities, Ga DHS, Ga DCH, Ga DJJ, Ga DOC, and Ga DCS. All of those listed are instrumental with providing resources / information regarding abuse prevention, mental health awareness, and so much more.”

  • Shy, Macon, GA - Louisiana State University

“I believe Georgia Youth should know that the resources are here to help, and not judge them. It's a way so they can have less of a struggle trying to deal with it on their own, and even temptations. Prevention resources work if someone allows it to work, it takes two for it to put in the efforts for a change. You can't expect change unless you change.”
